I read this book almost entirely in one setting. I fell instantly under the spell of Rose and her love of homonyms, her dog Rain, and numbers. Rose reminded me of some people I interact with fairly regularly and reminded me to be patient. This book broke my heart so well.
It was a bit of a slow read for me but it goes out at my library all the time! I am intrigued enough to read book two
I am going to sit with this one for a bit. I want to reread it because IFelt it was disjointed the first time around. At times it was hard for me to tell when they were talking about musicians and when they were talking about soldiers. Maybe that was the point. I wish that I had more background about the Harlem hellfighters because I think that would have clarify things for me. I think the kids would need some background to fully understand but this could be a good jumping off point.
I enjoyed this story about a girl searching for her birth mother. I wish I personally had more background on the Korean War, although the way this book is written, you can sometimes forget it's set in a historical time period. I was swept up in the mystery and the artwork.
Short, sweet story of Perry, an only child who is scheduled for lots of activities but wants to connect with her grandmother. She creates an abecedary about the nursing home her grandmother lives in as a way of connecting. I enjoyed this sweet little story, although I felt like I was dropped in and whisked out of someone's life without fully being given beginning and ending details.
If you would like an overview of what having an anxiety disorder is like, it's history, different medical treatments, and why having one may be a blessing, look no further than this title. Stossel uses his own struggle to frame the narrative, which is a good touchstone.
