I really enjoyed Maya's story. She takes popularity into her own hands. By following the steps in this book, she becomes more confident in herself and making friends happens more naturally. I liked that she tried the steps for a month, but then dropped the ones that weren't twirling for her anymore (like wearing a skirt or the diet). An excellent read for middle school and up. Note: sex Ed class is mentioned, which may change your opinion of what the target audience is.
This book wasn't what I expected it to be, and that's okay! I was expecting a story about a boy leaving Oman for Michigan, and for the book's setting to actually change as well. Instead, this is a story about a boy accepting his temporary move to Michigan. It's a lovely quiet story about Aref, his love of turtles, and his grandfather, Sidi. Lovely.
Another winning book of poems by Joyce Sidman. I enjoyed this take on winter animals, especially the bees.
Now that I have caught up, when is the next volume out? I needz more Saga.
A look at how Lois Ehlert became an artist and how she creates her artwork. It's pretty awesome, and I hope it encourages others to get into art.
I really wanted to give this one 4.5 stars. It's published by DK and the Smithsonian and is packed with information about dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures. The illustrations of the dinosaurs are really cool, especially seeing the velociraptor with feathers. My only complaint is that there is a lot of technical information. Dinosaur aficionados will probably have no problem with it, but I was overwhelmed.
A great overview of all the different jobs dogs do. Now I can go pet all of them, yes?
I wasn't really into it until about halfway through the book. For me, the killer was that the book was written in present tense. I did get into it and enjoy it quite a lot, but is it listworthy? I'm not sure.
