Loved this book and I'm not even a horse person! I loved that it was based on actual urban horse farms, which I had no idea actually existed. If you get a chance to listen to the audiobook, it's quite good.
I think this one works better than Evans' previous work, "Underground," but I will say I read it to a group of third graders and asked what they thought and they mostly seemed confused. Perhaps they haven't covered the Civil Rights era quite yet.
I think this book combines a traditional biography of Lincoln with questions and comments that children have. Does one really need another Lincoln biography? With this one, I would say yes.
This is my favorite MSBA nominee (outside of the one written by Gary Schmidt). I enjoyed Jessica's journey and thought it was an accurate teenage reaction to losing a dream only to come up with a new one. There were a few parts that were a little too tidy.
This series was so good! Mythology lessons, a HP/Percy Jackson readalike, fast-paced action, excellent audiobook reader. However, the ending is lackluster. The book is quite good until the very very end. And then I felt like Michael Scott was like "Shoot I need to end this" and wrapped it up very quickly. I also felt like one plotline was left alone for too long, and didn't really understand how it connected to the rest of the story based on how results ended. Oh well. I will still recommend it highly.
This was an interesting look at the history of Puerto Rico, which I didn't know much about. I would also say there are a few similarities to "Gone With the Wind," in that they are both about headstrong women in love with a parcel of land.
I really enjoyed this book, although I really wish that I had reread Divergent right before starting this book, because it took me a while to get back into the swing of things.
