Animal: Cats
A cutesy read-aloud for the smallest cat lovers--and it has a great story arc for such a young age.

Math: Counting
Close-up photographs of common items laid out in various ways to help children count. There are some neat twists including "four things that are the same. Four that are different. Or two of each." Brocket even provides the elusive zero at the end. The text is not rhyming but has a steady rhythm.

Writing
Beatrice loves to spell but doesn't get the same enthusiastic interest from her friends. With persistence and a unique appeal to her friends, her friends catch the spelling bug. There were snippets of spelling lessons throughout such as the silent 'e,' combining words, and imagining the word in your head before spelling it out.

Art: Theatre
We see the Yiddish Theatre through Rifkeleh's eyes as she watches her parents get ready for the stage and perform. She even makes a little debut herself (which seemed unlikely, but kids won't care). Suitable for Jewish readers but more so for fans of acting and the stage. Perlov provides fun backstage snippets with detailed descriptions such as putting a beard on, applying makeup, and fun stage tricks. The artwork is full of detail, but sometimes it is a little confusing. For example, one character appears multiple times on the page without a distinctive break in the artwork. There is also a small, odd overlay stamp that Kawa uses throughout her artwork that looks akin to Wingdings (I kid you not). With the right imagination, the artwork should be a hit.

Fairytale: Little Red Riding Hood
What a stupendous interpretation of a common fairy tale that would fit perfectly in a classroom. Holub uses Little Red, a pencil with a writing assignment, to explore the elements of writing including the structure, verbs, adjectives, conjunctions, adverbs, and suspense!

Animals: Polar Bears
A fantastical story of Emma, a child that is asked by a carousel polar bear to bring balloons--and lots of them. Upon tying the balloons to the bear's saddle, and climbing aboard, Emma and the bear float away with the wind toward the North Pole where a polar bear rumpus was taking place. The artwork is definitely a scrapbooker's dream with a lovely collection of paper patterns. The story is soft and whimsical (perhaps targeting older girls) with adventure and travel, not too long and not too short--perfect for bedtime.
