A definite celebration of summer without a story. Repetitious rhyming and vocabulary reinforcement.

Combines poetry with nonfiction blurbs. A little text heavy for a picture book but caregivers can have descriptions to describe words of most interest to them, or it's good for advanced readers.
Has some patriotic themes in it.

Where even reading this book is an adventure, Scaredy Squirrel's neurosis--and creativity--prove hilarious. I'm not really sure if the audience should include children scared of the beach. Before Scaredy Squirrel comes to enjoy the beach, the scary stuff about it may reinforce a child's behavior. But the humor and bright pictures might encourage a child to listen to the end where good things happen when going to the beach.

A great concept but I felt like the storyline was too jolty. Little girls will still love the book.

Sparse worded text invites children and caregivers to talk about the many adventures at the fair.

Family: Grandpa
Season: Summer
"When Grandpap teaches Charlie how to plant watermelon seeds in the spring, Charlie hopes they’ll grow a "Wishing Watermelon." Grandpap has never heard of such a thing, and when he asks Charlie what he would wish for, Charlie won't tell. Through a whole summer of biking, fishing, basketball, and waiting for watermelons together, Grandpap tries to guess his grandson's harvest wish" (Goodreads feature review).
It was fun to read a story where the child was holding the secret twist to the plot, not the adult, where the adult was curious and inquisitive and the child held the answer. For beginning readers, most all pictures match the words.

Ooo I just loved the rhyme scheme in this one. And this would be a great read-aloud to a group due to the simple, large illustrations and the bouncy text.

Animals: Pet cat
This is a spot on interpretation of the two sides of a cat: the daytime snoozer, sweet pussikins and the nighttime stalker, merciless hunter. I would not advise this for children that are scared easily or are squeamish because Dunbar does not hold back from the terror that Cat Hyde induces on his prey. Another great, fabulous part of this book is the poetic form and the absolutely beautiful vocabulary. Very real to life and is entering the nonfiction Pets section at the library.

Familiar Experience: Getting lost
Daisy and her owner are out for a walk (with Daisy's new blue ball) when a squirrel captures Daisy's attention and steers her deep into a forest. Soon enough, Daisy is lost, looking for her owner. I loved the paneled pictures where the owner is running one way and Daisy is running the other way. Stay in one place when you're lost, Daisy! A fantastic follow-up to A Ball for Daisy with flowing pictures and an easy-to-tell story line for parents and children (because it is nearly wordless).
