Although kids might feel a little frightened that their parents will send them to obedience school when they act like a dog, this is a cute picture book with fun pictures and a satisfying ending.

Age: 1st-3rd grade

A refreshing step away from the traditional picture book, both in subject (a cursive writing snake) and a more novel-esk writing style. These both gear the picture book to an older audience. The plot had a lot of potential but there was really no climax to owning Blake the snake--he was just cool.

"WAAAAA! When Mira's wish for a sister at long last comes true, she's thrilled—but the new baby isn't exactly what she expected. Who knew someone so little could make so much noise! No matter what Mira or her parents do to soothe or amuse her, the baby's reaction is . . . WAAAAA!

On the day of her simchat bat, her Jewish naming ceremony, the baby cries--as usual! That is, until Mira steps close to offer her own special gift and the inspiration for her parents' choice of the perfect name" (Goodreads feature review).

A lovely tale all around, I particularly liked Mira's annoyance yet love for her little sister.

"Spoon has always been a happy little utensil. But lately he feels like life as a spoon just isn't cutting it. He thinks Fork, Knife, and Chopsticks all have it so much better than him. But do they? "Spoon" serves as a gentle reminder to celebrate what makes each child special" (Goodreads feature review).

A delightful subject for young children interested in their surroundings. After Spoon's parents reassure him of all the things he can do, he lies in bed unable to sleep due to his excitement. That is, until "there was only one thing to do"...to spoon! One of the cutest endings to a book, perfectly executed.

Age: Toddler

"When a playful pooch goes a little overboard with a stuffed animal and gets in trouble, he decides it's time to run away. But being a "dog gone" isn't as easy (or fun!) as it looks, and soon the pup misses his owner and home. Luckily, even though he's made a mistake, his human best friend is always waiting with open arms" (Goodreads feature review).

Sparse text that actually tells a story of being mad, afraid, and, ultimately, loved.

"A boy and his brave puppy are ready to camp out in their backyard The boy's not scared because if things go bump in the night, he knows Alfie will protect him: from space invaders, boa constrictors, and even alligators Alfie's not afraid of anything Right, Alfie? ....Alfie?" (Goodreads feature review).

A lot of this story will get it's humor by reading aloud and talking about the frightful expression on Alfie's face as his owner describes what Alfie is not afraid of.

William Powell encapsulates the true power of determination and passion from his time spent as a caddy on the gold course to his creation of the first golf course designed, built, and owned by an African American.
