A gentler introduction to the tragedy of slavery and one black man's attempts to find happiness. While the story is based during the times of slavery, it provides little facts or numbers about this historical time period and instead bases itself upon the life of Henry Brown, how his family was quickly taken away from him while he worked, and his attempts to flee the south and find freedom in the north.

Animals: Octopus
Good for encouraging acceptance and appreciating an unusual pairing but it just didn't strike me as particularly special. Kids will like the silly humor.

Emotion: Being quiet, Loneliness
Big and bold illustrations show quiet Dennis being exactly who he wants to be: a mime! But it gets lonely sometimes--almost like there is an invisible wall separating him from other children. When Joy catches an imaginary ball that Dennis has thrown, they become best friends.

Food: Desserts
Mean-spirited toddler in the form of a cake gets some wise lessons from polite, kind, and thoughtful cyclopses. Silly twist in the middle shows the power of the word "Please" and that "no cake is ever too rude to change."

Leave it to Sesame Street to provide a well written, inclusive song in 1982 (especially talking about 2 daddies *le gasp*). Sweet pictures accompany the words, making this perfect to read aloud. A classroom staple.

Things that go: Bus
Readers follow Nana and CJ as they travel across the city on a bus, observing the people and environments they're in. Wisdom, patience, and respect naturally flow from Nana's words and actions modeling to CJ a way to see the beauty in the world. The illustrations are full of life and interest, making this an easy repeat read.

O'Leary and Leng provide an amazing array of family dynamics as young students share the things that make their family special. The dynamics aren't expressed with labels but described in the most joyful and excited ways that only children can provide. Great opener for classroom discussion and to talk more about your special little family with your children.

When is the best time to do things?
Who is the most important one?
What is the right thing to do?
Through his trademark watercolors, Muth presents this classic short story by Tolstoy. The best kind of time is now, the most important one is the one you are with, "and the most important thing is to do good for the one who is standing at your side." A beautiful philosophy for encouraging direct and meaningful action and change.

Nonfiction: Civil Rights Movement
This really is a fascinating, first-hand account of the Civil Rights Movement from the perspective of a young revolutionary. I appreciate the inclusion of two topics that add complexity to Civil Rights: power-hungry and viscous police as the norm and breaking off from older generations that encourage too much caution.
