Shred or Dead

The artwork reminds me of the Loud House. This is about a town known for its skateboard gangs or crews. A not-so-great crew of misfits are trying to level up and find a place to shred. The way this book is drawn makes the gang seem like they’re from the movie Grease or from West Side Story rather than what most modern gangs are like. There is some narrative and in all honesty this book is boring. I am DNFing  at 24%. I like the artwork and even part of the concept, cannot get past how boring it is.

Vampires Never Say Die

I wanted to like this. I like the previous book in this series. In this book, we have a woman constantly worried about her weight. When she wakes up as a vampire Hunter, she ends up weighing more because it’s muscle but constantly worried about she put on all this weight in these ounces… it got exhausting. I’m sure there’s a good story in there someplace as the first book was fantastic. But that character also had to get over this hump of I like myself. I think the reason I find this one so annoying is that she was mad she was getting thinner and looking better but the scale said more. This is supposed to be about hunting vampires and falling in love with one. But the beginning was just so blahhhhh,  as if the character wants you to hate them. Therefore, this was a DNF.

I was listening to this as an audiobook. It is incredibly long and it is hard to tell an audiobook when the author is themselves is speaking, when they are quoting somebody else, or when they are describing another source. There were many interviews or sources used that they quoted heavily and that became hard to pay attention to. I think this book works better as a book than as an audiobook.

Christmas Eve Love Story

This book is a DNF. We start with a young woman who does store windows getting told that she will be laid off in the coming year. And this is after she already feels embarrassed from falling over her tall shoes, dropping multiple things out of her purse and running into the security guard. This book is a set up to find love between her and the security guard and that’s perfectly OK. I think for me it’s the reader that is getting to me. I think I would like this story as a Hallmark movie but as a book it feels to drawn out. I am DNF thing at 5.2%.

The Merriest Misters

This book was a very short DNF. I love a good holiday romance novel. They’re like a Hallmark movie for the ears. And while yes, I should understand a couple trying to find each other. I just don’t find it something I want to listen to at the holidays. This book starts out with our two misters. Their relationship is on the rocks because they’ve been married, but don’t make time for each other. Well, I know the description tells me that they end up taking over for Santa Claus and decide to give each other a year to make the relationship work. I never got to any of that because them not having time for each other was a depressing way to start a romance novel.

The Christmas Jigsaw Murders

Edie O’Sullivan is a curmudgeon, who doesn’t like the holidays, or people, or even her own family.  She is a retired teacher in her 80s who spends her days doing jigsaw puzzles and creating crosswords for the London times.  But someone is out to ruin her already dreary holidays.  Evil shenanigans are afoot when Edie receives a package of puzzle pieces with a note to solve the mystery or else.  She gets the neighbor, and her nephew involved, and the story progresses.  This is no Angela Lansbury.  This is not a cozy festive read, but rather a slog through various parts of Edie’s history, and the stories of those around her.  It is terribly slow, and I find myself not wanting to start out on the story again after I turn it off each night.  I need something more fun and uplifting for Christmas.  Or something with more blood and guts.  Let’s save Ebeneezer for the TV as the story is told better there.

This is a short audiobook of a Christmas tale, but I am DNFing it. I can get behind the love story of a bunch of 50-year-olds and everyone making mistakes, but when the main character has been divorced three times, I don’t find a character I want read another romance about. I applaud everyone their journey, but I can’t get into a love story, knowing the characters had three others and gotten it wrong, made the wrong choice, etc. It makes finding a Happily Ever After implausible.

This is a DNF. I’m 10% in and it’s all about two idiots making meth, wanting to move to Cincinnati and getting interrupted by something landing from space. This is a galley and it’s kind of fuzzy, which makes it hard to read, and I just don’t care to try and struggle through. Even if the meth heads are only part of this for the first few pages it’s not worth getting to the end.

Ghost Town: A Graphic Novel

This book seems OK. Kids might enjoy it. I shall be DNF thing as I just find it annoying. It feels like every single character is constantly anxious and no one can be calm and we haven’t even really gotten into a lot of the ghosts yet.

HoverGirls

I am sad to say but Hovergirls is a DNF. The main character Kim is so annoying. I cannot take it anymore. Kim and her best friend are moving to the city. Kim is very bubbly a bit of an airhead and very much into fashion and boys and not caring about anything else. Her best friend is more standoffish and socially awkward. But can they make themselves into superheroes and get the publicity Kim wants. The reason this book is a DNF is because of how airheaded Kim sees. I really hope she finds the strong person underneath by the end of the book, but I don’t care to wait the next hundred pages to find out. The other thing I don’t like is there is a size difference in these two girls and Kim is on the heavier side. The outfits they draw her in art extremely cute and I love that. The way Kim be behaves and the way others treat her is stereotypical of a larger size woman, and not in a good way. The boys that use her because she allows it is one of the things that I find most annoying. And her other qualities while also annoying are not cute enough to bring a redemption for the other. I really wanted to like this book based on the cover, but I’m sorry it’s not worth the time to finish it.
