This is one of the most powerful books I've read in a long time. Written from the POV of two members of the group who accompanied David Livingston in the last years of his life, and their journey to bring his body home, Out of Darkness Shining Light speeds through thousands of miles and a story some people might only ever have a vague idea of.
My favourite thing about the book was how it closely wrapped together the contradictions of men - from David Livingston himself to the characters wants and needs. I loved the contrasting parts written by the emotional and honest Hamila, compared to the pious and quite frankly, hideous Jacob Wainwright.
A true exploration of the issues related to the scramble for Africa, and how the missions and explorations of White men impacted those who lived there and didn't need to be saved.
4.5 stars and only rounded down because some of Jacob's preaching was A Lot for me.

I probably would have given this a 4 star review if it wasn't for the bit about Andrew's favourite whiskey being Glenmorangie. It's no ones favourite whiskey, esp not a good critic..
The characters are terrible (even though they are meant to be,I think) but after the first 100 pages I rattled through it in one sitting, staying up to finish it. In current covid times isolating for 7 days and in a large country Manor house seems easy...
