Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks for providing an e arc of this title.
This book by Bethany Baptiste is a witchy ya that has family drama, Political intrigue, and an interesting magic system. It has a family mystery at its heart with the main character having a love interest who is non binary. I really loved the inclusion of a non binary love interest, and a main character that identifies as aroace. I really appreciated the seemless use of the correct pronouns, showing how natural it could be if we let it be as simple as there are more than two ways to identify gender and sexuality.
The magic system in this book was super interesting and I would love to read more books with a magic system like this. What was special about it wasn't in the way the magic manifested but, in the way it was identified and was relevant to all types of love in society. It was interesting that the first scene showing the full range of the magic was a request for familial love and not a focus on romantic love.
With the family drama, it was really well thought out and felt very realistic. I also really liked that the mother was such a strong presence all the way through even after a particular event at the beginning. The intimacy was well done too. I felt it was done appropriately for the ya category and it also showed responsible behaviour regarding sex.
Overall, this was a good read. I actually requested this not noticing that it was ya. I do read ya, but it rarely gets more than a 3 star for me as I am just not the target audience and I rarely enjoy teenage angst. This is absolutely a me problem and should not put you off reading this book if you like witchy stories that are well written and have a both great characters and a good solid plot!

Thank you to NetGalley for my e-arc of this.
I was so excited to get this and read it as the movie was such a special experience/memory for me. It did not disappoint! I loved that the art style was kept in line with the style of the movie and that they didn't change up the plot too much. However, I think for someone who has read the book and watched the movie, the graphic novel was a little choppy and cut out some of the transitional information from scene to scene. I will absolutely be buying a physical copy of this and be collecting the series when they are released into the wild in September 2024!
I highly recommend all versions of this story.

Thank you to NetGAlley for providing a copy of this for my honest review.
I was very excited to read this just based on the description and the beautiful cover too. Overall, I was not disappointed. My only real criticism's would be is that it suffered a little bit from a very choppy writing style. Especially in the first half it did seem to jump from scene to scene in a way that was not smooth at all. To the point that some of the earlier scenes felt like they were not even finished before jumping to the next. Another minor criticism is that the title is not easy to read on the cover.
Right now that bit is out of the way, I can tell you all the things I loved. I really loved the characters and could imagine myself in their situation and wondering what choices I would make. I also appreciated the portrayal of the effect that a traumatic environment can have on how a person finds solace and even enjoyment. The plot was great and if anything could have easily had another 100 pages to feel more complete. I would have enjoyed more world building in the beginning to understand better how they ended up in the society.
I also can't do this review justice without mentioning the Trans and Non-Binary rep in this book. This was an element that I was excited to read and see included. Overall, I thought it was pretty good rep. My only issue really was the over sexualisation in the beginning and the pairing the transfeminine person with the type of sex was uncomfortable to read as I felt it played into some negative/harmful stereotypes. Equally, I understood there was a progression there with the characeters but that wasn't really followed through with fully.
I will look out for more titles from this author because I overall enjoyed the book and would recommend it to those that like dystopian stories that leave you thinking deeply about the world we live in. I also think people that are character driven may enjoy this too.

I really enjoyed this. I thought it was a well thought out and researched book. The layout and the beautiful art made it a pleasure to read. I found it interesting and engaging and I particularly enjoyed the influences that each woman has in today's society. My only sadness is that the people that really need to learn from this book will either not read it, or will read it with their blinkers on so they don't challenge their own prejudice's.

I love a mythology retelling from a female perspective. However, this was not my favourite of them all. The things I did enjoy included the portrayal of Artemis. The middle section of the book was most enjoyable but I found my mind wondering in the first and last thirds. I think what was missing for me was some of the humour and depth in connections between the characters which I didn't really feel with this at all. There was a heavy reliance on the idea of Hera being a victim to the world... to the point that she was often distracted by that concept. This then motivates her decision making and that for me, was not enjoyable to read 300 pages of.

This was fantastic!! It felt like I was watching a movie in my head and it was sooooo spooky in parts that I actually have not stopped thinking about it since I finished it. The characters were well formed and I felt like they had a lot of depth. I particularly enjoyed the B'n'B' owner. I also didn't mind that there was a lot of supernatural things happening which I don't always appreciate in books, it was done well in this though. It was my first Simone St. James and I will definitely be reading more from this author. I loved the balance of ambiguity with concrete answers. I think it's a special thing when an author can lead your imagination to and from the flow of the plot. I would recommend this to people who like a paranormal, twisty, spooky, creepy, thriller with characters that will intrigue.

I really enjoyed this overall. I enjoyed the mystery and I didn't guess the culprit until quite late in the story which was nice. I'm a character driven reader but I enjoyed the plot more in this than the characters. I didn't particularly like or dislike any of the characters really and got a little annoyed with the miscommunication between the sister and one of the brothers. I also got frustrated with the "how many days without rain" plus the "amount of precipitation" at the beginning of every chapter (but this is a minor thing and bothered me more when I was just listening to the audio). I started this just on audio as I was traveling, but then switched to immersive between the audio and e-arc. I found it much more enjoyable when immersive reading. The mystery was good as it was quite unique in that the mystery was 3 fold in that there was the missing people, the weird things from the lake, and the mystery of the mother and were the memories reliable etc. There were a couple of spooky ish moments but it was more of a mystery to me overall. I would recommend this to anyone who likes a thriller/mystery that isn't gory or paranormal.
