Thank you so much to Meg Humble for allowing me early access to book 2 in A Cursed Queen series. This review is completely my own thoughts and feelings and is spoiler free (other than I mention some of the tropes). **please note that there are some mentions of drugs in this review that are purely for jokes and descriptive purposes**
Soooo let me start by saying that I gave the first book The False Queen 5 stars easily and have since re read it twice. This series has some of my favourite aspects like found family, witches, positive representations of relationships, and twists that you don’t see coming, high stakes missions and self discovery and of course magic. So going into The Vengeful Queen I was expecting more of the same.
I was not emotionally prepared for not only there to be all of these things but with an added smattering of crack between the pages. The way I turned these pages it was like I had no control or anything else to do with my life… It took me a while to get to… but now I am glad I waited until I could sit and binge read it. I would not have been ok if I had to put it down over different sittings. Now I absolutely cannot wait for book 3.. but alas I have too.
The point of view in this one switches from single in the first, to dual which was such an effective choice and really was one of my favourite things about this book. Not only this but because the characters are so well fleshed out and you already feel like you know them well from the first book, I felt really invested really early in the book. From feelings of worry and concern for certain characters, to elation and just pure joy in moments, I felt everything on the spectrum of emotion with this one. The stakes are high but it’s also really easy to root for the characters and trust they are capable… you just hope that luck is also on their side. Oh and that time is also on their side… timing is everything in this and oh my gosh did I love the ride.
I would recommend this series to anyone really but in particular… if you are looking for an entry point into fantasy romance this is great. If you are looking for found family or even blood family, witches, magic, slow burn, should hate to love romance, believable story lines (even with the fantasy elements) and characters you love or love to hate.. and a couple who are loveable but make some dislikable choices.
