A great sci fi book that was a tiny bit too long. Weir's writing is funny yet deep. Accurate but not too scientific. It reminded me of Stanislaw Lem.
we get to know a lot about Ally's background and former relationships. it's really great how Sejic forms his characters and how wonderfully he tells this story.
The combination of heist and ghost story is quite interesting and worked far better than I expected. The characters start off as a bit one-dimensional but that changes a bit at the end. I hope that change continues throughout the next trades. I also liked, that it is a complete story. So you don't have to buy the next trade volumes, but if you're intrigued there's more to come.
I expected a sort of hunger games meets mila superstar story but was surprised to learn that it is something completely different. It's a story about finding identity, of alienation, of what society and family expects of you, of how media works as an industry and of the feeling of (not)belonging. It is aimed more at young adults so yeah it has that in common with hunger games. But MARA is far better.
HINGES is a wild mixture of pinocchio, pokemon and jungle book. Sort of. I think it is quite interesting how the main character is totally passive and doesn't speak a word until the end of the book. I really liked how McClaren plays with colors depending on the mood of the story. So far, the story is a bit of a mystery to me, because there isn't a lot of explanation going on. Things just happen. So you follow Orio and her Odd Bauble around the city of Cobble as she stumbles towards the events. I hope Volume 2 isn't too far away from publication.
