This was my first C.J. box and really first kind of "western" novel and this was really well done. The characters were wonderfully developed, the plot had a great red herring in it, and the setting felt vivid and real. I will definitely continue on to the next book in the series. If you like police procedurals, or mystery/thrillers with a western flavor, you might enjoy this.

DNF at 10%. I just don't jive with space-y scifi.

I don't have much to say about this other than it was really well done. Nonfiction true crime and history that reads like fiction.

I can see why this is a short story rather than a full novella or novel. This is similar to The Silent Girl plot-wise only with far less intrigue and fewer interesting characters. Probably my least favorite book in the series.

2/24/23. ok. I'm glad I picked this book back up because I'm really interested in reading the next book in the series. If I read the outline of this book mapped out, I would totally love the plot. The execution of the plot is what killed the story. Typos, weird time jumps, a lack of clarity around setting, lots of new characters without explanation. Just not well executed. Needed better editing.

wow, wow, wow. This is my first Baldwin and won't be my last. He is just genius.

I know this book has faults. I KNOOOWW. But. I just loved it so much. The only thing I'd change is for there to be less info dumping. And the level at which I loved all the good things about the book far outweighs that one picky change. In this book we get to know our core characters even better. The kiddos develop new magical skills. We meet some really cool new characters, and there is non-stop action. Messenger also does a good job building out the world not only by letting us travel to more areas of the lost cities and other realms, but in the way she builds out the history, politics, and social structures of the world. I'm officially obsessed with this series.

This one got a little convoluted but it was still a fun time.

Nella Larsen is so underrated. The tension throughout this book was top tier. It really packs a punch. And that ending! I'm still reeling. Read it. Just read it.

Oh my goodness this was soooo cute. Very cottagecore and witchy. Also included a sweet sapphic love story.
