Overall, not a fan of this. I did make it all the way through the first volume but didn’t even make it through the first chapter of the second volume before I just completely lost interest. The first chapter of this volume was the best part, everything afterward just fell flat.
Literally every person the main character knows gets killed and he has no reaction to it. He just leaves without a backward glance. It was bizarre.
I also didn’t care for the art style. I could not tell the sand masters apart and while flipping through the 2nd volume, the last chapter is done in a completely different style for some reason? I would have rather had this story as a novel, even if the magic does lend itself to a visual medium.

Another great backstory, right up there in quality with Butcher and Drive.

Similar to other reviews I’ve read, I’m not sure what the point of this short story was. We got a little glimpse of Bobbie through her nephew David’s eyes, but he was more focused on obsessing over the source of his erection, Leelee, cooking drugs for Leelee’s boss, and being a surly teenager chafing at the expectations of his family (hence the whole cooking drugs thing). Unless David becomes super important to the story in the last book (doubtful but who knows), I’m just not sure why this was a story that needed to be told.
