It’s a cute little book. Could have used A LOT more editing and refining. But the plot was cute, the interactions were adorable, and the HEA was satisfying.
medium-paced
I didn’t love it. But I didn’t hate it. Overly predictable plot, poor foreshadowing, and really juvenile writing. I don’t understand how people rave over this book, but to each their own.
I wanted to love this. As a hetero cis woman, I felt a responsibility to follow this through. I tried. I usually read fantasy as an escape from reality, I want to read nothing political. But I know I can’t just stick my head in the sand, these are important lessons and truths being told in the book. So I pushed through and kept on.
I just kept finding myself being bored, finding other things to do to just not read. It felt like it was written for young adult, but being told from a POV of middle age women? I’m a child free by choice 30-something woman so the mothering aspect also, did not appeal to me.
I loved the world building, I wanted to dive further into this world that Juno Dawson created.
I’m an adamant believer in DNFing books and not having regrets or guilt because life is to short to read books you don’t care for. But because of the very important message this book is sharing, this DNF weighs heavily.

I was so close to DNFing this. I listened to the audiobook and I think I’m done with the series. It’s like two different people wrote the perspectives. I struggle to remember whose voices are whose because the two narrators use such different accents so it doesn’t feel cohesive. (And I LOVE Justine Eyre, she’s the reason I picked the series up!) So much mansplaining, so, so much. The pacing felt very off. Every time I thought I was at the climax of the book, I’d look at the time left and it’d say 3 hours, 2 hours, and 1 hour. Seriously, the last hour could have been shortened down to 15 minutes.

I feel that the Married to Magic books read like young adult, but have obvious adult moments. I appreciate that it has not been labeled as YA though.
What I really appreciate about the series, with this book especially, is the interpretation of the fae. It’s not the SJM interpretation that everyone is clinging too these days. It reminds me more of what I’ve read of the fae 10-15 years ago. It’s refreshing to see more than beauty and pointed ears.
