This was a quick read, it kept me hooked! Switching from one character to another with each chapter was super fun. I was excited every time I saw who's name was up next! This is not my usual type of read but so happy I picked it up. It was a very feel good story. I need two follow ups: Dustin and Jessica each need their own books with a bit of Thuy sprinkled in each. Also, give that girl a paintbrush and a canvas! She's in the big city, make some big art!
I flip flopped between 3 & 4 stars for this one so let's say 3.5. I read this book because it was trending everywhere and I had FOMO.
What I loved about this book:
The protagonist is me...in a way.
I have joint issues. I'm easily injured. I'm always injured. I have a tall strong friend. I'm brave and a smartass and stubborn and competitive in an adorable way.
The world. I am so intrigued by the world Rebecca Yarros is building here. I need to know more about it. I want all the historical texts. I need them, even the folk tales. I read the blurbs at the beginning of each chapter and found myself looking forward to them when normally I skim those. I want to know more about the dragons and the gifts they share with their riders and about the war and the rebellion. And Vi's mom, what's with her?
The story was good. I can't say I didn't see most of it coming early on, but I was still entertained. That's a good word for it, this was entertaining. That's why everyone is flying through these pages the way they are. We are constantly in a state of: I need to know more right now!
What I didn't like:
The protagonist is unrelatable to me...in the following ways: I could never let someone distract me from a life saving battle because they're hot. She also got whinier as the book went on.
The smut. I'm not a big reader of smut. I skimmed the sex scenes and could have dealt with them if that's all there was to it but, I found it particularly difficult to stay focused when our girl was all about to die but couldn't stop drooling over what's his name. Seriously?! It didn't even happen just once. It got to the point where I was rolling my eyes, like come on. Violet seemed at times desperate and irresponsible for someone whose life was on line. Everybody's gotta get theirs but there's a time and place, like shit.
The chapter from Xaden's POV. I had a hard time believing that was his internal dialogue...
Final thoughts:
The ending obviously clinched me. I will be reading the 2nd installation of what I hear will be a 5 book series. I am hopeful that there will be less focus on how hot Xadan looks without his shirt on and more world building!
