Rating doesn't reflect the book's quality. The writing is very good. I just could have done without the level of violence and I don't like books with graphic animal death. Would have DNF if not for reading challenges. A lot of people will like this more than I did; just check the content warnings and proceed accordingly.

Loved the marsh setting, the two main characters, and the cast of supporting characters. Thought the conflict between the MCs was fairly realistic and not too annoying. Couldn't rate higher simply because the dialogue between Joss and Gareth increasingly read like they were in couples therapy as they were speaking too each other. It became almost funny, how intensely HEALTHY their communication was. Not bad, but it's just not how people not actually in a couple's therapy session that very moment speak to each other.

I am slowly getting more invested in this series, but it also continues to annoy me more than I enjoy it. Rand is still insufferable even when we should be able to empathise with him.
