Thank god that's over. I listened to this on audio and it's over 30 HOURS LONG. Do you know how long the final action scene, the big culmination, the grand fight with the big bad, took to listen to? No joke, about 15 minutes.
- Am I supposed to like Rand at some point?
- What the hell was the Tylin/Mat garbage?
- Unless I missed something in an earlier book, being around a Ta'veren suddenly started functioning like being dosed with a truth serum at moments where this was useful to the plot
- I am deeply, deeply tired of "men are so confusing, women are so infuriating, men can't do anything sensible, women can't be relied on, men make stupid decisions, women baffle me". This reductive use of gender as a constant plot device and feature of the prose was boring three books ago
On the plus side:
- Nynaeve finally overcoming her block in a way that felt believable
- Ebou Dar was an interesting setting
- Cadsuane is an interesting character
- Some mild enjoyment derived from Elaida starting to crash and burn
Overall though, being only half way through this series, and learning this is only the START of what is termed "the slog" and that it might last for several books, leaves me shuffling the next book way down the priority list.
