Updated review:
Much better on the reread because it was less confusing. Reading the glossary and Cohort files before starting was very helpful and I wish they'd been at the start of the book.
Previous review:
3.5 stars because it took over halfway through the book to get me invested in the story. Good mystery and story once it got going though! I'm not one to say this usually, but I think I would have rather watched a movie of this. Tentatively interested in the sequel because Harrow's an interesting character.

I'd heard such great things about this book so I'm a little let down. This is the second book I've read by Reid and I think I just don't care for her writing. I liked the story but felt the writing was weak, especially in the contemporary parts.
A challenging book to read while almost a year into a global pandemic. I missed most of the satire due to personally being a millennial office worker in a capitalist society during a pandemic. I have experienced checking the daily death toll with my coworkers while drinking a morning coffee. I have walked through a nearly empty New York City because even though the office was closed, I needed to pick up more supplies to keep working. I have muted news notifications during unprecedented times so I could focus on meeting deadlines at work.
I don't have cohesive thoughts on the book yet, but it was definitely very good and will stick with me.

This is a five star book for the deeply personal writing and rich, intimate story. I don't know if I would say it was "good" but it was executed flawlessly and made me cry more than once. I wouldn't recommend it to a friend and I'd never read it again, but it is a five star book.

Unlike anything I've ever read. Darkly funny, I really enjoyed it. An odd book. I didn't even realize the narrator didn't have a name until reading reviews after I finished.
The audiobook was wonderful, as expected with Julia Whelan.
