This wasn't a great read. It was sometimes a fun read, with the occasional bit of action or interesting world-building details, but they were far and few between. It sometimes had the energy of an early-2000s-superntaral-teen-romance movie, but it never leaned far enough into the camp to be really entertaining.
It was bookended by some interesting and exciting scenes, but most of the middle was fairly dull and repetitive. The whole concept of desire and bloodlust and a school where young vampires learn how to control all this to eventually become essentially superspies is really enticing and a cool take on vampire lore, but it never quite hit the mark. No scene felt pushed to be as important as they should have been. Every moment raced by and nothing was lingered on or stressed about in a way to make consequences feel important.
Overall, this was a boring read. The writing style is very plain, too many characters were introduced at the same time and they're all quite flat it's hard to distinguish between them, the dialogue is often awkward and unrealistic. And, to be quite frank, it needed to be hornier. Vampires are sex monsters, often queer sex monsters, and while there are hints of this quality throughout the story, it is again not given the sort of weight or spotlight it should.
Bad, but not fun bad.

Really enjoyed this! My first Ania Alhborn book and definitely want to check out more. My only gripe with Seed would be that I wish it were longer; I wanted to spend more time in this setting and with these characters, I wanted to spend more time learning about Jack and his history. Loved the writing and tone. Overall, a really good and worthwhile Southern Gothic read.

Perfect. Charming. Delightful. My-new-favourite-book-of-all-time.
EXQUISITE autism and ADHD solidarity rep.
FOOTNOTES!!
I was originally only going to give this a 4.5 because I needed just a touch more romance BUT then I turn then page to discover their adventures are going to continue?? I suppose I'll just stfu and wait oh so patiently for that release!
Beautiful writing, deeply lovable and relatable characters, a truly magical Nordic setting, exactly what I want from fae and fairytales - both beautiful and monstrous and monstrously beautiful. This is author is clearly as well-researched as Emily Wilde herself.
A few more adjectives for the road - Enchanting. Whimsical. Cozy.
