A new all-time favourite for me. Perfectly gloomy atmosphere, felt like I was getting cozy by a fireplace while witchy weather blustered on outside. Felt nostalgic and warm the whole time. Reminded me of Coraline, but never felt overly simple like a children's story. LOVED the characters and the setting and the shadow world. Just a lovely read.

Everything about this story is absolutely perfect. The characters, the body horror, the Christian-inspired cult, the quotes at the start of each chapter, the SYMBOLISM. Amazing action and so moving and, if you can empathize with any of the kids even a little bit it, utterly heartbreaking in the best way.

Probably would've enjoyed it more at 14. Then, the simplicity of the story, fairly flat characters, and blunt exploration of certain themes may not have been as detracting to the overall reading experience.
