Some books stick with you for a life time. I first read this book over 20 years ago, and still it manages to leave an imprint on me with every read.

Olive is a vibrant young woman, about to start her HSC year, when suddenly, and what seems like out of nowhere, her world comes crashing down around her. Suddenly Olive is struggling to comprehend the trauma she endured at a young age.

This is a deeply moving story of healing and hope. Of faith and love and determination. It shows Olive as a relatable human, full of passions and promises. We see her torn down and stripped bare to her very soul and then walk with her on her journey to self acceptance and healing.

Savvides uses a wide range of story telling techniques. Apart from the regular narrative form she engages in poems and letters to help up really understand her characters. This is a tale that does not tarnish with age. It is a story that should always be told and shared.

Every few months I find a books bout teaching or teachers and I pick it up. This is a topic I love to read about, especially when it comes to Aussie teachers, with me being an Aussie primary school teacher and all.

I didn't know what to expect when I picked up this anthology. I really loved some of the essays, they had my laughing or crying or nodding in agreement. One essay had me excited because it is set in the same town I teach in! But then there were some essays that I didn't agree with, I questioned. Some made me angry or frustrated.

Maybe that is a sign of a good anthology. I spoke about it with teacher friends, and I just kept reading, even when super frustrated. Either way an interesting read and one I plan to leave in the staffroom for another teacher to pick up and read.

I found it rather hard to follow at times as it kept going around in circles. It lacked the sophistication I had hoped to have read, instead it spoke in stereotypes and was far more political then I expected it to be. I read this as we were leading up to the referendum for additional guidance and information but again left me scratching my head and thinking HUH?!

Unfortunately this was not the book for me, It didn't capture what I needed, and left me with more questions than answers
