Spooky and surprisingly sweet at the end.

This is probably one of my favorite reads of the year. WOW. This is the kind of book that made me react out loud. It was so wonderful. Romantic. Ooey gooey. Perfect.

I had no expectations for this book. It was very weird, but I definitely enjoyed it.

Oof, this was rough. Jennette is a darkly funny writer. This is an amazing memoir.

I genuinely thought that I would be rating this much lower than 4 stars. The first half of the book was slow. The characters felt very flat and unlikable at the beginning. However, once the boys went to war, the story really picked up. I even teared up at the very end.

I would still say this is a bit overrated, but I did end up enjoying it.

I think this is probably closer to a 3.5. The characters were super infuriating but I ended up liking it overall

3.5 stars. It was enjoyable to listen to, but the characters and the story were a bit of a mess. I liked it but didn't love it.

As always, Moreno-Garcia creates an intoxicating and rich setting for her characters to move about in. This wasn't at the same level as Mexican Gothic or Gods of Jade and Shadow, but I still really enjoyed it. I think the characters didn't feel as fleshed out and real and that may be why I struggled to connect as well with it. However, it really made me want to learn more about the period of Mexican history it was set in, so I appreciated the brief discussion of this time period in the afterword.
