Look, I'm a sucker for anything based off Hades and Persephone, okay??? I really liked the addition of many aspects of mythology in this particular book - Menthe, Sybil, etc.
I picked this up when I saw it on a list of "found family" books (reading challenge required one), and I was pleasantly surprised. It was a really nice YA book, even if it was a bit predictable. I don't know if I would have labeled it *found family* but I did like the girls and their friendship.
3.5, it was okay. Mainly I just expected more twists and turns based off the reviews I read.
3.5! I ended up liking this more than I expected. The hang ups of the characters bothered me, but I loved the characters being in their 40s. It was refreshing.
I knew I would like this book because the first one means so much to me. However, I didn't realize I would love it just as much. It's very different from the original in the best way possible. In Out of My Mind, we saw Melody struggle to make a place in a world that isn't made for her. The ending of that book made every class I ever read it with furious at the quiz team and in shock about the surprise ending.
Out of My Hesrt isn't that, and I am so happy for it. We get to see Melody in a camp build for her and kids like her. Melody gets true friends, respect, and experiences that "typical" children get all the time. And she gets to have a crush that totally reciprocates. I sobbed with happiness. IT IS DELIGHTFUL. THIS IS THE SEQUEL THAT MELODY DESERVED.
This will probably be one of my favorite reads of the year, easily.

I think I liked this better than the sequel (which I accidentally read first). Marie and Leo were endearing, and it was obviously nice to have the background for where book 2's romance came from
