Reads like YA romance, aka rich heroine and poor vaquero who are best friends as children, a surprise reunion, forced proximity, said heroine learning how to shoot and fight from the vaquero, and lots and lots of emotional choices made in an instant. Oh and there are vampires thrown in. Despite that, I wouldn’t really call it a horror novel. It’s more like a historical romance, with some horror elements. It’s a 3 star read for me, but I can see how this would really work if you’re in the right mood for this type of book.

Every so often, I like to read something outside the status quo just to see what other writers are doing. This book is wacky and surreal and possibly self-aware? It’s about obsession and the desire to devour what you love - aka when we say “I want to eat you up” to a baby and when you think about it, it’s pretty disturbing.

I really wanted to like this more. The audio is charming and wonderful and cozy. I just wish there were more substance; there are some heavy topics, namely E’s mental health, disappearance, and the relationships, but the book seems to rely more on its charms rather than explore these topics in depth, and it created a disorienting effect for me.

2.5 stars.
