Enjoyed this re-read. This will never be my favourite Austen, but I love Edmund, and Mrs Norris is delightfully horrible. Can't get past the fact that Fanny is a wimp though!

I loved this book. It felt raw and real despite the often frivolous banter between the main characters. The writing from different points of view gave it quite a disjointed feel, but that was in keeping with the whole atmosphere of not knowing what was happening and what would happen next. Wonderful descriptions and use of language. Definitely a book I will return to.

A moving memoir exploring the relationship between the author and her mother. It focuses for the most part on how the author's Korean identity was bound up with her mother and the Korean food they ate together, and how she tried to hold onto that following her mother's death. Fascinating and emotional.

For some reason, this took me a long time to get through. I don't know why, because it was SOO good. Trevor Noah's own narration brings the story to life, and it is by turns funny, informative, fury-inducing (because of apartheid and racism), and emotional. Wonderful.

This is a novella written in simplified English, primarily for new readers.
As such, it misses a lot of the nuances and clever language of the longer books. The atmosphere of Three Pines and the depth of relationships is also missing. It's an enjoyable enough story, but the nature of the beast (see what I did there?) means it's not up to the standard of the longer Gamache books.

A quirky re-telling and mash-up of a couple of well-loved fairy tales with the emphasis on the female characters. Beautiful detailed black and white illustrations. Wonderful language and storytelling, but I felt the ending fell a bit short.

This was an interesting read with the focus throughout being on scents rather than on sights and sounds. Emmeline is brought up on an isolated island by her father, and the tone and content of the first part of the book make it feel as if it is set in the past. When Emmeline is abruptly catapulted into the modern world - although initially into a quite isolated and "gentle" part of it - it is a shock.
The author does an excellent job of portraying Emmeline's emotions as the story progresses. Things happen, but the focus is much more on her and how she is feeling than on the action, such as it is.
I particularly liked the part of the book where she discovers the truth of her past, and how her relationship with her mother progresses. And I was happiest of all when she worked out at last where she really belonged.

This was an excellent, enjoyable read, and the narration was superb.

Notes on a Nervous Planet

Objectively, I think this is a good book, and could be very helpful for someone suffering from anxiety and/or depression. But I felt I was just skimming it and not taking anything in. What I did take in didn't seem new or relevant to me. I guess it just wasn't for me.

Beautifully observed poetry with wonderful paintings alongside. Hughes' view of the world is sharp-edged and slightly savage, but no less beautiful for that.

This is a lovely book. So much wisdom and comfort in a few words, and the illustrations are delightful and charming.
