This was a hard book to read, for many reasons. The trigger warnings at the start of the book are very important: particularly the fact that there is sexual abuse of a child.
This book read far more as a psychological thriller than horror to me. The supernatural elements felt forced and incidental to the main story, and I never really understood how they fitted in.
The ending was clever, and - to me at least - unexpected. I felt that I needed to go back and re-read to see what I'd missed, but I didn't enjoy it enough to want to do that. While I felt very sorry for the main character, Bethany, she was never particularly likable or even very well fleshed out. The whole novel is full of unlikeable characters, and that always makes me struggle with a book.
It was an interesting read, but unfortunately, clarified to me why horror and psychological thrillers really aren't my thing at all.

A quick, enjoyable re-read. Tom is a great character.

This was interesting, informative, and sad, going into far more depth about the lives of enslaved people than I had expected. The extrapolation from the simple sack to what its owners' lives must have been like felt a bit forced at times, although the author does go into some depth explaining the paucity of evidence about individual enslaved people because they were not seen as important enough to document in depth, and because they owned so little. I found this quite hard going, but I'm glad to have read it.

I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected to, having heard mostly bad things about it. I thought I didn't care about Coriolanus Snow, but I found out as the book went on that I did.
I began with complete sympathy for him, which presumably was the author's intention, but that diminished as the book went on, and the extent of his arrogance, family pride and self-justification became more obvious.
The consistency in the world-building, and the setting of the scene for the original Hunger Games trilogy in this book is so well done. I really enjoyed this read.

I will never not love these stories or these characters. This one is desperately sad in places, but somehow also uplifting. The depth of characterisation is masterful, and I enjoy the introduction f new side characters and the snippets of backstories for the main characters.

I bought this on impulse, and I'm really glad I did. A wonderful mixture of mythology, history and nature-writing, with a pair of teen protagonists I loved. Atmospheric and tense and beautiful. Didn't read as a YA novel. There was a contemporary storyline alongside the main plot that felt a bit forced and not quite in line with the rest, but overall a really good read.

A lovely colourful story about how we all have different talents and ways to shine, and how that's okay. Also about the importance of kindness.

A lovely slow read reminding us to stop and take notice of the little things, and to appreciate the beauty all around us.

This was an interesting look at the use - and abuse - of drugs in Nazi Germany. Especially striking was the contrast between the clampdown on recreational drug use during the early days of the Reich and the routine use of amphetamines in the military to keep the troops going with very little rest. Hitler's increasing dependence on a cocktail of dubious drugs - and his equally dubious physician - was also a revelation. This was  a bit slow and repetitive in places, but overall a good read.

A lovely hopeful story about forgiveness and new beginnings. Two of the three protagonists are "older", which was good to read. Hard things happen, but ultimately this is a story full of love and hope and the beginnings of joy.
