Well done in the gothic style, our impoverished heroine enters the house she has always admired from afar as a governess with a backbone, only to uncover a family harboring secrets. I found the story to be well done, although the hero did seem to conveniently disappear from the page "away on business." That was the only thing that jarred me. I liked the brooding hero, the heroine's plucky outlook on life and the banter with the butler. I grew up reading Victoria Holt, and this book immediately recalls those novels to mind while upping the sensuality level.
Another winner.
I read the Lucky Harbor books out of order, and this is my last one, which makes me sad. But Ms. Shalvis has other series, which makes me happy. Her writing is consistent, her characters three dimensional and realistic, their stories heart-wrenching, heart-warming and captivating.

The author writes such perfectly flawed characters, the perfect balance of dysfunctional and vulnerable.
Another Lucky Harbor gem. I have to say I still don't like Tara whole lot, she's a very unlikeable character, but who can argue with a love story so brilliantly written! In spite of her "unlikeableness", Tara is a well rounded character, quirky and flawed and relateable. And then, of course, there are the alpha men in the book that you can't help but fall in love with, the men who know there's only one woman for them, whether they like it or not. I love the way Ms. Shalvis brings in secondary characters to remind the main characters what they've survived, been through, felt. Mia and Carlos were an excellent parallel to Tara and Ford, a reminder of their past, and hope for their future. Unerringly consistent, Ms. Shalvis's writing carries me away every time.
