Aside from the bad writing, slow plot, and cardboard characters... I don't read books with filth and profanity in them. No thanks.
I liked this book pretty well. It is carefully written, and the characters act like themselves, as Austen would have imagined them. The style is not, of course, quite like Austen's, but it is a tolerable facsimile. The plot is interesting, but slow in the beginning, picks up a little in the middle, then moves quickly at the end. I enjoyed reading it, but I wasn't blown away.
There is a very contrived mention of the Elliots (from Persuasion) and of the Knightleys (from Emma) that made me roll my eyes, but we never actually meet those characters.

I remember now why I don't like this author. The writing is pretty great, but I hate the portrayal of every female character. They are weak, vain, stupid, indecisive, clingy, sad, selfish, on and on.... There's not a good one in the bunch! And they make bad decisions about the men in their lives. Not exactly the role models I want to read about. Only a woman would dare write about women this way.
What a fantastic fairy tale! I love the whimsical writing and the sweet and funny story line.
