I liked this last book of the Once and Future King Quartet. It had more action, more dialogue, and a focused plot. However, it also had more philosophizing and more unnecessarily detailed descriptions. One entire chapter was just descriptions of the types of people you might encounter in the Middle Ages. No plot whatsoever in the entire chapter! So I basically skipped all the liberal sermonizing about the state of the human race, and only read the actual storyline.

It was interesting to see the differences in Arthur, Guinevere, and Lancelot in their old age. Their tempers are mellowed, but their resolve is still there.
I felt so sorry for poor Gareth, and Mordred was creepy beyond words. Great characters!

Amusing, funny characters, interesting, quotable, fantastical in plot... I love it!

What an awful story, but beautifully told! Nasty characters, but wonderfully described. Terrible philosophy, but appealingly submitted. I hated that I loved it.

I feel like this story was being told out of order. Such a strange series of events and memories and odd descriptions of random people. Egh.

My feelings about this book are best described by this quote from the book: “I was within and without. Simultaneously enchanted and repelled by the inexhaustible variety of life.”

Why did I read this stupidity? I knew before I started that I would hate it. But I didn't hate it enough to stop reading. I got entranced somehow.

So sad and awful! But oh, the exquisite beauty and poignant sorrow! I loved it!
