This is the perfect fluffy book for a chilly autumn evening! Curling up with a cup of tea and a hilarious ghost mystery just before Halloween- it doesn't get any better than that! I like ghost stories when the spirits are friendly, like Aunt Dimity and her ghostly cohorts.

This book doesn't have Bill or the twins in it, because Lori is traveling to a haunted mansion to categorize their ancient library. As if I needed another reason to love her character- she's a bookish person with a bookish job!

Lori is at her best in this book, full of courage and fear, independent but needing help, flirty but faithful to her husband, brilliant and sometimes stupid, trusting and skeptical, all at once! She is such a beautifully complex and well-rounded person. It just adore her raw humanity! In this story, I really love how she gets all motherly toward everyone, trying to take care of them and guide them. She is such a caring and compassionate person.

And there is a new cast of supporting characters around Lori, each with their own background and their own voice. Each person has such a distinct personality, and their own way of interacting with the other characters in different circumstances. It just makes for interesting story-telling to see them all pushing through the mystery together.

There's a little of everything in this book- tragic accidents, historical mysteries, romance, ghostly apparitions, intrigue, burglary, crime, action, suspense, hidden treasure, cozy tea times by the fire, and of course the delightful Aunt Dimity giving timely advice to the intrepid Lori.

I love this whole series!

I love these delightful books! This one leaves you with a bit of a cliffhanger, and I can't wait to get my hands on the next one so I can find out what happens! Dolittle really is an extraordinary character.

Really great sequel! Loved it!

Another masterpiece! a complete surprise.

Gah! The Ending! What?!? My brain can't stand it, and my heart is limping along all hurt and crushed and stuff. Dis book!

Okay, let me start from the top. This is the story of a dystopian future world where most people can only see one color or some not any color at all. The Greys are looked down on and oppressed by the Colorgentsia, and everyone's place in society is determined by the percentage of color they can see.
There's definitely a "1984-Big-Brother" vibe going on with the government controlling every aspect of the citizen's lives.
In the middle of it all is Eddie, a high-color Red with a bright future, until he meets and instantly falls in love with a Grey named Jane. Jane is involved with some very deep revolutionary stuff, and Eddie gets dragged into it all, somewhat against his will, but mostly because he's too good-hearted, kind, and morally upright to cheat and play the system like everyone else does.
Oh, Eddie... you lovable idiot. I want to strangle you, then hug you and kiss it better.

The convoluted plot reminds me a little of Wodehouse's plots, with all these crazy and weird situations coming together in unexpected ways. The writing is hilarious and dry, but also with a lot of serious themes; death, disease, oppression, conspiracy, and murder all mixed into the same sentence with silly pranks, friendship, family heritage, desire, and even the nature of love.

The writing is absolutely brilliant with a clever and acerbic sarcastic humor. It's definitely original and forceful and fun! I was totally involved in all the social games and political connections, especially because all those supporting characters are so weird and interesting. The world-building is absolutely wild and I was amazed with the imaginative details, and then as the story goes along, we learn more about the world, the history behind it and the dark underbelly of the government and society. So good!!!

I only gave it 4 stars because there were way too many characters for me to keep track of, and I kept forgetting who people were. Towards the middle, I started keeping a list in my head though, and I remembered mostly everyone.
I also gave it 4 stars because, the ending!!! I hate you so much, Ending. You are not nice, Ending. I don't like you. You are brilliant and perfectly written and exactly right for the tone of the book, but I still hate you. hmpph. So there.

Now I have to read the rest of the series! So much love!

Never a dull moment with this series, and this book in particular is a really fantastic one! I am just in awe of the twists and turns in the plot, the beautiful character development. Each character is so perfectly constructed, they feel like real and true people. Brilliant writing, and excellent pacing. I couldn't put this one down!
It was interesting to see Bobby really growing up on his own without his uncle there to help him. He's becoming stronger and more capable, more confident in himself, but also more aware of his own weaknesses and flaws. It's just brilliant, incredible story-telling!

Everything that a well-written children's adventure story should be. It follows the formula. But I've come to expect more from Funke. She didn't color outside the line with this one, but it was still very enjoyable.
