What a great book! I love it! The characters are well-written and interesting. The plot is fantastic, never a dull moment. Delightful!

I kind of chuckle to myself though, every time I find a blatant parallel to Lord of the Rings. There are so many obvious copies from people, places, and situations of Lord of the Rings that I have lost count. The forests where you daren't cut down a branch, and the marshes with tricksy lights that lure you into deep puddles. An immortal glowing lady who tells weary travelers to rest in her enchanted woodland palace made of trees. Massive evil spirits that have long slept in the depths of the earth which are awakened. A city built in levels of circles on the side of a mountain. There is even a mention of the Mirrormere by exactly that same name. The appendices have a similar beginning history of the earth just like LotR with a heavy emphasis on music. On and on the similarities are endlessly obvious.

But I have to say.... if anyone could pull it off, this author does. I don't mind the LotR references. I like them! They are like old friends dressed in new clothes. After all, there is nothing new under the sun, and this story has a good balance to it. The author weaves the story-world together so pleasantly that I am enchanted.

Wonderfully imaginative! Really original and interesting. Great characters and plot, delightful all through! A couple of times the writing was unclear, and there are too many dragon and people's names to remember. It is also sometimes unclear if the name spoken of is a person or dragon. But other than that the writing is brilliant! I love the writing style and the use of special 'lingo' for the fantasy culture and their habits. It's very detailed, enchantingly different and yet familiar.

Since our main character is dealing with emotional abuse and a longing for music, this really hit a chord with me and drew me in. It made me so mad that they wouldn't let her play music just b/c she's a girl, and I absolutely identified with feeling that you "must" play. Something inside that will not be denied just has to sing and compose and make music. I love the combination of strength and vulnerability in Menolly. That makes for a great main character.

I can't wait to read the next one!

Love this book about Dahl's adventures during the World Wars!

Captivating story with a romantic interest. A more clear plot than some of her works. Loved it!

Another collection of delightful stories!

Beautiful story of courage and friendship on par with Lord of the Rings!
Adventure without stop; emotional, endearing, and absolute genius.

So delightfully and typically British all through.

Harriet shows herself as a strong, capable woman here. Love the banter between her and Peter!

Ooooh, I love seeing Peter undercover!

Creepy one, and oh, so very good!
