The Queen: A Novel

Nick Cutter

DID NOT FINISH: 43%

I’m beginning to think that Nick Cutter books are not for me. As much as I want to support Canadian authors. I just can’t get into his books.

“There’s nothing more brutally organic than the human mind and all its diabolical inventions.”

Close Your Eyes and Count to Ten
⭐️

I can’t even tell you who this book is for because I did not enjoy it at all. The characters were all unlikable, the plot felt too all over the place to keep my attention and there was not a turn was I shocked about. The premise of the book was there, but lacked execution for me.

It’s possible I’m being unfair to people with beards, but I always feel like they’re hiding something."

The Crash by Freida McFadden

This book is for readers who enjoy suspenseful reading about motherhood, survival, and the dark sides of human nature.

MY THOUGHTS
This honestly to me was a motherhood version of Misery by SK. It didn't seem to be that original in thought at all, other than the husband aspect to it for the main topics. Some smaller side topics differed. Although I truly didn't see the twist coming, which is why it has a 3-star rating. Otherwise, it would have been way lower. I'm starting to learn that her books aren't really that original in thought.

"For maximum potential, riders should be stationed close to their villages if possible. Nothing is a more effective motivator than seeing one's home on fire."

Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros

This is for readers who enjoy fantastical stories with romantic undertones. For those looking for emotional and adventurous reads with a sometimes tense mood.

FINAL THOUGHTS
The first half of this book was a snooze fest. Honestly, Violet is getting on my nerves and I just want to slap her. I am positive I am going to be on the unpopular opinion of this series. However, if it wasn't for the pick-up in the second half of the book I would never revisit this series. We will see what book four has in store to make my final decision but it seems to be going downhill for me, almost in the way another fantasy series has *FBAA*.

“The ‘witch finder general,’” I say. “We studied him briefly at university. He’s analogous with witch hunts and mass panic, although ‘witch finder’ is a euphemism really, isn’t it? He tortured women. Nothing more.”

Something in the Walls by Daisy Pearce

THE VIBES
An atmospheric thriller for those who enjoy dark and suspenseful stories. Explores the complexity of trauma, and the power of guilt and dip a toe into the world of superstition. Perfect for those who are fans of psychological horror and mystery.

FINAL THOUGHTS 💭
Did I love this? No. But it was enough to keep me engaged and needed to know more. I felt like something was lacking within the story for me to be completely enamoured. However, I think that people will enjoy this one.

“I thought everyone took vacations on a train with armed sentries at both ends of each car.”

They Called Us Enemy by George Takei
🖖🏼 🖖🏼 🖖🏼 🖖🏼 🖖🏼

This for is for those who are looking for a powerful memoir written as a graphic novel, a must-read for anyone interested in history, social justice, and the American experience, particularly those who want to understand the complexities of identity, community, and resilience in the face of adversity.

 FINAL THOUGHTS 💭
This book should be a must read for young people, or for anyone. I personally don’t know a lot of this history as with a lot of the not so nice history of North America it was not taught to me in school.

This story is heartbreaking, angering and hopeful all in one and to tell this story in a graphic novel really hit the points I think the author was going for.

“In Goblin the dead are buried standing up.”

Goblin: A Novel in Six Novellas
🦉 🦉 🦉

THIS BOOK IS FOR ..
Readers who crave a chilling and atmospheric tale of small-town secrets and mysteries, with a penchant for the darker side of human nature and the supernatural, and who enjoy a slow-burning, suspenseful narrative that will keep them on the edge of their seats.

FINAL THOUGHTS 💭
I want to say four of the six novellas had me hooked but the other two I found myself uninterested in the characters. It was a cool way to read the book, but I felt it missing too much. I wanted more from Goblin.

“Some people are uncageable. They resist bars, locks, keys. Embraces.”

Tone-Bone by Kyle Winkler

QUICK SUMMARY 🖊️
Learn more about Tone-Bones life in this side sequel to The Nothing That Is.

FINAL THOUGHTS 💭
There’s just something about Kyle Winklers writing that drags me into the story and keeps its claws there the whole time until the end where I sit and think “WTF did I just read?” Tone-Bone is no different, I almost wished I reread The Nothing That is before diving into this one.

“Marked or not, every one of us has Breath enough to will our own destiny into being.”

Breath of the Dragon by Shannon Lee & Fonda Lee

QUICK SUMMARY 🖊️
Sixteen year old Jun has been exiled along with his father and dreams to bring honour back to his father and himself and hopefully someday see his mother and brother again. Entering the Guardians Tournament seems to be exactly the ticket.

FINAL THOUGHTS 💭
This book is perfect for those who want to get into fantasy but get lost in the world building. Although it’s there it’s not as complex and very easy to follow. The entire story had me enchanted the whole way through and I cannot believe I need to wait for the second book!

“Keep in mind that trauma is personal to the individual,” Max says. “One person’s trauma is another person’s bad day.

The Clinic by Cate Quinn

QUICK SUMMARY 🖊️
In a remote rehab clinic, a young woman dies promoting her sister to enter as a patient in order to find the truth.

FINAL THOUGHTS 💭
Okay, so a lot of people are torn on their thoughts on this. I personally loved it, and I went into it with a different mindset as soon as the author made the admittance that this was their first book sober. Parts of this book were inspired by her time in rehab herself. I really enjoyed the look at trauma and addiction from the views of this book. It felt like nothing but everything was happening all at once and I couldn’t put it down.
