funny fast-paced

Side tearingly funny but it stops at a weird place, which throws the pacing off. I'd have preferred a longer autobiography but it's still bloody funny!

I enjoyed this; I didn't think I would enjoy it as much as I did.

A fantastic book with some eye opening insight into the experiences of Black Americans in the early 20th century. Some of the pacing was off for me, but it didn't stop me from enjoying the work.

For the first spy novel, this was bloody great. I read it in one go, and I'm so glad I did. It's fast paced and punchy, and the plot is exciting.

There is a hefty dose of casual racism, however, and the main character is a bit of a selfish, wreckless ass, which endangers people often.

I feel like this wouldn't be published today but for a book from over a century ago, it's very good.

Bonus fact: This book contains the word 'funk', which I never knew is over a century old.
relaxing fast-paced

Unsurprisingly, not being a pre-schooler, I didn't get an awful lot of pleasure from this book. I did, however, learn more about Haiti so it was definitely worth the handful of minutes it took to read.
emotional informative sad medium-paced

I loved the subject matter of this book but the style wasn't something that I loved, it flitted between prose and what felt like large sections of verbatim interview very readily. I didn't love that but it's just a me thing.

On the actual content, I am mad. I am so angry about the injustices faced by the Apache people, and I do not know how America can claim to be a free country when native Americans are treated with such disdain.

Eye opening, maddening, and recommended.
informative slow-paced

Book itself is fine, I expected something different though rather than a literal book of maps and info. The formatting of the epub was completely broken on my ereader and I ended up having to read it on a computer.

I wish I didn't, but I absolutely hated this book. The plot is interesting and the characters are too, but I found the writing style simply too jarring to properly enjoy. I finished it, but my god it was not something I had fun doing.
funny medium-paced

A funny enough book but the Audible recording is markedly poor and has massive variation in volume. Read a hard copy or don't bother at all.

This is a great book. If mentorship interests you, I think you'll definitely enjoy this as Davies provides some interesting takes on it that make perfect sense and are now going to be the basis of how I view it. It's authentically her, and it's unapologetically proud of her background and story. I read this in one go and I'm sure you will to.
