This is an excellent continuation from its former, Spirits Entwined. The development of the characters jumed massively but done with grace. The world building has the same vivid descriptions as the first book so safe to say, I am thoroughly entertained reading this one.

I started my journey with the author back when she wrote To Kill a Kingdom [another awesome book BTW] and then down the rabbit hole I went. Learning that she has written a slight variation to her usual works, got me all giddy and I am so happy I got ahold of this book before the release date [cause that means I had more days to scream my excitement and happily sob how wonderful this is]

The mythopeia of this book is truly an amazing ride to be in. Damn the gods to challenge Fate, is the kind of thing that is usually a tell tale sign of an action packed rollercoaster. The plot definitely delivered.

The characters were also full of badassery. A woman feeding of fears is probably one of the cathartic character traits I read by far. As far as romance goes, it was subtle but endearing at the same time.

Overall, a fantastic read and highly recommend

Seems like I have been reading tons of middle grade and YA books nowadays... and loving every bit of it!

If there are some bookish technicalities that I like, its characterization and world building. YA as it may, this book delivered on both aspects. I like an MC that likes books and actually talks about them too. Both MCs have distinct and vibrant characterization that makes them both endearing.

The friendship that forged both MCs together makes their adventure a little bit more fun to ride along with. The inclusion of magic is a huge plus. It made the world building so much descriptive and well, magical. Overall a really good starting book to a series!

Passion really does makes you feel things - and sometimes do things too. The narrative skillfully intertwines their professional synergy with Khalil's personal voyage, where his atheistic beliefs clash with an unexpected spiritual exploration.

The backdrop extends beyond contemporary chaos, reaching back to ancient Babylon, adding a layer of complexity. Although the word building toes between the creative and news worthy line of journalism, still the book delves into the intricate dynamics of journalism, exploring the toll it takes on the individual and the fine line between reporting and personal unraveling.

"Shigidi" weaves a captivating narrative, blending Nigerian folklore with a global adventure. The disgruntled nightmare god, Shigidi, and the mysterious succubus, Nneoma, form a compelling duo as they navigate a world of ancient gods, magical realms, and urban landscapes. The author's vivid descriptions transport readers from the vibrant streets of Lagos to the swanky rooftop bars of Singapore and the secretive spaces of London.

However, the book falters in cultural accuracy and representation. While it successfully incorporates Nigerian folklore, other cultural elements, particularly those in Singapore and London, feel more like stereotypes than authentic representations. The portrayal of diverse locations lacks the depth and nuance needed to do justice to their rich cultural tapestries.

Despite this shortcoming, the story's strength lies in its unique premise and dynamic characters. The exploration of Shigidi's existential struggles and the complexities of his relationship with Nneoma adds depth to the narrative. The plot's blend of revenge, spirit business, and a spectacular heist keeps readers engaged.

In conclusion, "Shigidi" is an enthralling read, marred by a need for more nuanced cultural representation beyond its Nigerian roots.

"The Jasmine Throne" by Tasha Suri is a mesmerizing tale set in a richly crafted world that blends fantasy and political intrigue seamlessly. The lush setting, inspired by Indian history and culture, adds depth to the narrative, immersing readers in a vibrant and exotic realm.

Suri's characterization is a standout feature, with protagonists who defy stereotypes and evolve with each turn of the page. Priya, a maid with a secret past, and Malini, a captive princess with a rebellious spirit, are intricately developed, making their journey compelling and emotionally resonant. The complex relationships between characters add layers to the story, keeping readers engaged.

The author's meticulous attention to detail brings the fictional realm to life, from the opulent palaces to the bustling marketplaces. The political landscape is woven seamlessly into the narrative, adding a layer of tension and suspense that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat.

In "The Jasmine Throne," Tasha Suri delivers a masterful blend of world-building and characterization, creating a fantasy novel that is both captivating and thought-provoking. With its lush setting and compelling characters, this book is a must-read for fans of epic fantasy and intricate storytelling.

"Shanghai Immortal" takes readers on a thrilling ride through Hell and mortal Shanghai with Lady Jing, a half-vampire, half-hulijing fox-spirit with a sharp tongue and a penchant for mischief. The story unfolds as Jing, the King of Hell's unconventional ward, discovers a plot to steal a dragon pearl, setting off a chaotic adventure.

The author weaves a tale filled with sass, humor, and supernatural elements, making it a delightful read. Lady Jing's explosive temper and relentless pursuit of justice add layers to her character, making her both endearing and exasperating. The inclusion of a mortal tasked with setting up the Central Bank of Hell adds an unexpected dynamic to the narrative.

However, the world-building falls short in some aspects. While the depiction of Hell and the blending of supernatural and mortal realms is creative, there are instances where the rules governing this universe feel inconsistent. The hulijing courtiers and their taunts provide a colorful backdrop, but a more nuanced exploration of the world's intricacies would have enriched the storytelling.

Despite these criticisms, "Shanghai Immortal" remains a captivating read, blending fantasy, humor, and a touch of romance. It's a rollercoaster of emotions that keeps you hooked until the very end, wondering if Lady Jing will choose revenge or embrace a chance at tenderness and love.
