Truly one of the bleakest books I've read. Incredible portrait of addiction published in 1971 that feels much more modern in its storytelling in many ways. I often forgot I was reading memoir and at times felt like I was reading something Elena Ferrante wrote, it felt the way that her protagonists describe their lives in hindsight. An incredible ending to a very good trilogy. I cried as it closed.

Finished this within 48 hours and the menacing tension was palpable. I couldn't look away from Alex's journey.
