Robin Hobb is so good at writing men that are just insufferable. So insufferable that you just wanna grab them by the throat and hold their heads underwater until the bubbles stop. That is a compliment. 

Is it bad that I don’t give a shit about Kennit at all? I’m sure I’ll regret that later, but he’s pissing me off right now. And Kyle Haven and Regal Farseer are neck and neck for the number one man in the Realm of the Elderlings series that I want to set on fire.

Althea, my light and stars, you make horrible plans but you are too good for these people.

Books like these always shock me because it makes me highly aware of the things some people in the U.S. don’t have to grow up learning. It also makes me deeply grateful that I had a parent and teachers who thought it important to teach me about my own history and why it is important to pay attention.

I can recall numerous instances in my own life, the lives of numerous family members, and the lives of my friends that could be tucked within the pages of this book and made examples. And sometimes thinking about that makes me so angry that I want to cry.

Some sections of this book are really rough, but you can feel the author was really excited to write this so I’ll let it go. I know there’s someone out there who probably really needed this book.

Holding this book in the air as I dance around in a circle as a ritual to get As You Are to open back up soon.

Not to be completely biased, but it made me weirdly happy that the author enjoyed being in DC so much.
