FYI this book made me hate theon even more than I thought I did. His chapters are worthless and I'd rather not read it. Other than that this book was beautifully written. Love it!

This was a tough read. I overall liked the book and the story - slavery was brutal and horrifying and this book tells those brutal and horrifying stories. Though, I don't like how the author wrote the book. His writing can be confusing which is why I gave it 3 stars. He will switch the story completely in just a sentence or two and it threw me off like wait what just happened?? It is a good read though!

2.5 rating for me.
Abby is a fucking bitch and she be playing games. This book was so frustrating honestly the most irritating character was obviously abby. The only reason why I actually finished this book is because I semi liked travis's character THATS IT. the rest of it was childish BS

UPDATE. After thinking about this book all night I decided to give it a 2 because this was a stressful shit book with an immature girl that has no idea what she wants or what love is continuously break a guy, that is already fucked up in the head, heart. The ending was so lame I am still rolling my eyes. Like yea the story was cute because travis loved her so much but the gambling and the fighting I was so over it. Don't waste your time people! I did! I read people's reviews on this book and was like oh Ill try it out ANYWAY, NO I should have listened. Sooo looking forward to my next novel.

I. Want. More.
This book was so good and I want a sequel right now.

Loved it. Love the characters and the build up of each character, I think I liked this book better than the 2nd even though they are ALL great, this one is really great. Made me love Jon Snow and Dany and Arya a lot more. George is genius...onto the next book!

Best book written by Jodi! So great, twisted ending!

This book was addicting, I was constantly trying to find out what happened in the summer of 1862. I wanted to know more about Birdie, Edward, Lucy and what happened and how it connected to the present day. I love how the author wrote the book, jumping from time to time. I wish I could of heard more about the secretive love between birdie and Edward, I thought it was very special and it could of added a twist to the story, which is why I gave this book a 4 and not a 5. It was an amazing book though, definitely a good read if you love history.

Loved this book, it was so emotional and so horrifyingly sad (these types of books always are) I bawled my eyes out throughout this book because I can't even imagine myself living through such terrible atrocities. The ending was absolutely beautiful and how this family stayed strong and supported and loved each other through the war was amazing and that is how they all made it through.

One of the best books I have ever read - the ending was joyful and I loved how the author ended the book. Every page was written beautifully and painted a picture in my head of the life of Vyry and her family. Even though the history of slavery was horrible and dark, it made me realize how strong willed the black race is and how they thrived for a better life and worked hard to provide foe their family in spite of the white mans hate. Margaret Walker is an amazing author and I cant wait to read more of her books. I wish there was a sequel to this book so I can read more about Vyry and her family.
