As usual, Mhairi’s writing is a joy to behold. The dialogue is fantastic, with lots of wit, humour and conversations you can imagine having with your friends IRL. Speaking of friends, friendship and female solidarity are huge themes in this book, along with standing up for yourself and knowing it’s never too late to make the choice you want.

Although it’s not the main focus, the book does have romance in it and I love love love the romance in it (it is slow burn and closed door). Mhairi has a way of writing characters that have your whole heart in a very short amount of time. They felt real, realistic and well thought through.

I’d really recommend this book - along with all of her other books!!

I would approach with caution if themes of emotional and domestic abuse are difficult for you to read. Other content warnings include death of a parent, infidelity, domestic violence and cancer.

I really really enjoyed the first 3/4 of this book, and was very much along for the ride, the characters, the body positivity and love story. I found the last 100 pages less loveable though. A Thing happens which I understand, but it left me feeling detached from the plot & characters and the way certain things are gone about were at times a little frustrating or eye-roll inducing. Good fun overall but I won’t be shoving it in anyones face or desperate to pick up the next book.

I LOVED this book. My first 5 star read of the year and I am delighted it lived up to my expectations.

So satisfying for a book to deliver exactly what you hope, isn’t it?

I could go on and on about this book, but to keep it relatively short and sweet: it’s a fast-paced, gender-swapped fairytale retelling with brilliant dialogue, plenty of adventure, humour and romance. It has themes of found family and opposites working together.

An absolute delight. And I loved reading with my pal @bookbeforeuleap ☺️

I would recommend for those who enjoyed the found family, dark humour and adventure of Six of Crows, the fairytale tipped on its head & romance of A Curse So Dark & Lonely and the humour, pacing, and opposites-working-together-against-evil theme in Little Thieves.

This is also a DEBUT. WHAT. Incredible.
