do not read this fucking book do not read this fucking book unless you are being forced to for academia and even then look for the goddamn sparknotes
talk about cliffhanger, bro ended the book in the middle of a conversation
are we just gonna ignore the dream-realm intentional magic incest...? also rain is as dumb as a box of bricks.

i think that this book is deeply flawed for two fair reasons. gender politics in an apocalypse WOULD be flawed. the world in this book is a horrible rotten place and the people living in it, even the “good ones”, are horrible rotten people. they are at times unlikeable and in others you hate them. they are what’s left though, cause good people don’t survive an apocalypse.
this book is also flawed because the author likely has some trauma she’s never finished unpacking. the deep rooted transmisogyny is both a fact of life but also an alarming insight into what is maybe a problem the author doesn’t know she has, growth she hasn’t made. this book is written with a sense of rage and hurt that comes from the mouth of those who have experienced the violence they’re writing.

LITERALLY what the fuck that was so fun. tammy my beloved. the fucking plot twist i actually SCREAMED. delightful
this is not about meat. this is not about trees. this is not about sisterhood or marriage or dreams. this is about violence against women from the moment they’re born until the day they die. violence and the subsequent trauma of it. and about the women around the victim who become victims as well because violence is a tidal wave, not a drop.
what a stupid fucking book. no one in that fucking town is sane. every single local is a bastard EXCEPT mattie who is a literal child. i'd whisk mattie, dominic, gabriel, and emma away to safety if i could AND LEAVE CLAIRE BEHIND.
book themes: lack of consent, adult bullying and coercion, dubious sexual content due to lack of consent, traditional wife gender roles, baby end game, religious overtones and moral absolution, and marriage HEA. this book was clearly for religious women trying to rebel a smidge.
