Absolutely amazing. Great action, great characters, great humor, great everything essentially. I fell in love with this series from the first chapter and each book just increases my love-obsession.
I never actually played the Myst games. I owned a PC version, but could never figure out how to work out the first puzzle. And I don't mean solve, but actually work. No matter what buttons I pressed or image I clicked, nothing happened. :/
But I know people speak highly of world, and I'd been eyeing individual books in the series for awhile. Getting the trilogy just made sense.
D'ni certainly is an intense world, full of history and great characters. I'm rather envious of the ability to Write, though I'm totally happy I live under the sun instead of under rock.
I had the same problem with each of the books though, they were very slow going. For the first book, I wasn't really connected to the story until it was almost over. And for the second, until half way through. The third captured my attention sooner, about a 1/3 of the way in. While most of the characters are the same or at least related, it took me that long to settle into the writing and absorb their stories.
The books are greatly crafted, excelent visiual detail in the words and the illustrations help a lot. But this is a book I had to remind myself to read, and I started and finished several other books between the first and last page.

I'm not one for the horror/thirller genre, be they books or movies, but I became aware of Sigler through his GFL series and fell in love with him. That being said, the humor that attracted me to the GFL and I expected a tad of in Ancestor wasn't there. Or at least, I don't think it was accessible for everyone. I had my own private chuckles at the Michiganer insider comments (though I have never heard of Ted Nuget) but don't think it would be as humorous to citizens of other states.
Still, I loved the science concepts in this novel. Very well thought out and researched, which made the result of the experiment that much more scary. Though I kept thinking, if the ancestors were so guided by their hungry, why didn't they start attacking each other for food?
I had a great time guessing who was gonna day and who was gonna live and was met with surprises which is awesome.

While this book was interesting, it kinda got old quick. It did make me look at some books in a different light, and I like the list of modern counterparts to classical heroines, but some of the books here I hadn't heard of. My to read list is certainly longer now.
I loved the prose in this book. Simpson gave Grace an amazing voice to a wonderful character, and the descriptive phrases were delightful. I was particularly fond of how she described food, which at times was a problem because many of the meals she mentioned I don't have access to ;_;
Grace is a wonderful character and I loved watching her grow from a girl with very little self esteem to a woman who has more courage and love than anyone I've had the pleasure of meeting. The people around her are very real, I could picture them in my head, and the struggles Grace goes through are sure to affect you.
