3.5 It took me awhile to sort out what was happening during what time period, with the book skipping back and forth rather quickly. But in the end I really enjoyed the direction this novel went it. I like the narrator a lot and I loved the conclusion. I loved the characters, even the ones I hated I loved to hate. I felt like I really understood the world of the novel, the way it colors the people and the plot.

This was a 3.75. TW: Eating disorders, heavy body horror, particularly body horror involving teeth.

I was really into this. I was at many points unsure if the book was going for thriller or true horror. It creeped me out and kept me guessing. I liked the themes of the novel which boil down to sometimes you've got some toxic fucking friends and its totally ok and good to let that shit go.

3.75 rounded up. TW: homophobia racism Islamophobia

I liked this book a lot. I think it reflects real teens who deal with a lot of these issues. I love how the characters were captured. My only complaint is that I don’t think we saw enough real personality out of the love interest. We got bits and pieces but she felt kind of like a shadow of a character.

2.5 rounded up. I mean it's fine? For when it was written, it's fine. I am sure it was a bigger deal when it was first published. I didn't really feel that the story flowed particularly well or that I understood the motivations for the characters. I mostly read this book in prep for The Haunting of Bly Manor which I will probably enjoy a lot more than I enjoyed this book.

2.5 rounded up. I just.... Yeah I didn't really care for this. I mean, it has everything I should have enjoyed in a novel. I liked the plot idea so much but it just doesn't play out as well as it could. And the characters don't really flow off the page. They could all have been much more flushed out. Instead we get glimpses of depth but not enough to keep the reader invested. Still, I thought it had some interesting things to say about thinking of others complexly and that right there is my specific brand of lit.

This was a fun read! I enjoy the way Fry writes and the humor he brings to these stories.

As in all anthologies there are some stories that are stronger than others. Overall, though, I really loved these. It was so exciting to read exclusively Trans* stories set in fantastical worlds. A lot of these stories I would happily take full novels of.
