I’ve read a lot of thrillers about small towns and crappy high school experiences but this was better than most. I like the running theme of how women are gaslit and told to down play the assault and harassment they experience. I think that aspect alone makes it more interesting than a lot of the other books floating around. It has a few first novel problems. I was pretty confident I knew what had happened to Kaycee and I turned out to be right. Still, I enjoyed the hell out of this. A lot better than some of the more popular books I’ve read.
What can I say about this series? That it is the best speculative trilogy I’ve ever read? It is. That it moved me to tears? Also true. That when I think of the complex world building and even more complex characters my breath gets taken away? Yes, that’s true too. This series... is genre altering. I know that kind of thing gets thrown around a lot but I have read nothing, ever, like this. It’s captivating and rich. It’s simple and yet complex. There is no one who writes like this except Jemisin. There is no other book on earth like The Broken Earth series.
