Between the shitty world building (and I mean really shitty world building), the names that double as a description (Aria likes to sing, Roar can hear things really well, etc.), the mary-sue/gary-stu flatness of the characters and the slight racism (the darker skinned characters are literally called savages. I'm not kidding) I couldn't really stand this novel. I'm also not a big fan of "living in fake worlds to not deal with reality" that adults keep putting into books (as if books weren't doing that, too) or the "surprise~ first period" trope. In fact, this book is littered with tropes I'm extremely uncomfortable with. I'm not at all sure why this book is getting the hype that I've seen. I don't think I'll be bothering to read the rest of the series.
