2.5 stars. It is likely more useful for someone less familiar with Shamanism. I was hoping for more detail on a lot of the subject matter and it wasn't there. A good prelim read though.
While I really enjoyed the first book in this series, I fell in love with this. With the world already built there was room for Zo to grow as a person and also for important loose ends to be tied. There are politics now in this world that we didn't see in the first book and supernatural politics are always one of my favorite subjects. We are getting closer to the reveal of the Big Bad and while questions have been answered we've gotten better questions that interest me far more. It's good to see Zo stand up for herself and it's also good to go a whole book without her damned ex husband showing up.
I am thrilled with the direction these books are going and I can't wait to get my hands on more! Sign me up for the next book for sure.

This book suffers from its length. I loved the concept and a lot of the details. I might have loved the characters more if I has gotten to know them more. It starts and stops very abruptly. I don't feel like much was accomplished from the ending other than an obvious character change. I wish this book could have been a little longer and maybe had devoted more pages to the minor characters who I tended to like better than Lance. Still it had some terrific elements that I got a lot out of.
I bought this book after hearing Kimiko Hahn read at the National Book Fair. An interesting mix of science and poetry. I enjoyed some more than others but on the whole I found them to be very interesting in their use of metaphor. I would have liked to see her play with some different forms in the book. Hahn is very talented. I look forward to reading more of her works.
