This is as cute as the movie. It's very episodic so each chapter is its own little adventure. It is just about the cutest dang thing, and it makes me want to rewatch the movie. Kiki is a great character to follow and watching her just be a young girl having fun was really great.

Oh boy. This is probably the most accurate depiction of teenage boys I've read in a hot minute. Don't get me wrong, there are times when I wanted to throw Nick across the room because he was being so dumb but also I kind of love how dedicated Klune is to his dumb gay boy. I love the heart of this story, love how much hope is put into it. I love the terrible fanfic inserts that were included because, really, who hasn't read or written fic like that? I have read a lot of fangirl/boy focused fiction and these one seems to actually get it right. So often there is a focus on how actually, oh my god, the fanfic is really good ok??? The characters are like, novel worthy writers who happen to write fanfic. And while that is certainly the case in some cases, I also just loved watching a teenage boy be both very enthusiastic and very bad at writing fanfic. It just hits right. I'm curious to see what the follow ups do with the story, though I think the direction is pretty clear but I don't want to spoil it. I still think it isn't my favorite Klune novel but it was fun and funny and sweet.

So I know that I'm supposed to be reading this at the same time as the Angel comics but I cannot stand Angel even in the new comics. I am glad to see Buffy back and there are still some questions that need answers but I'm back to enjoying these issues a lot.

Yes yes yes! Love that good good Kendra backstory, love that the comics are giving her more love than the show. Hopefully that will mean she gets to stay alive.

TW: fat-phobia, parental emotional abuse, vague mentions of cultural appropriation/racism. This is such a fun book. It was hard, at times, because the fat-phobia from Skye's mother was hard to read, but overall there is so much hope and happiness in the book. I love watching a fat bi girl just get to be talented and sure of herself even when choosing to do so is hard. I loved seeing a fat girl be cared for and loved so deeply by her friends and the love interest. This book felt like a warm hug from your best friend on your worst self image day.

Ok see that was a much better issue. Finally getting some of the better character interactions I was craving and everyone seems to make at least some sense. Still lacking a bit but overall a much better issue.

Oh gods this is so lovely. What a great mix of romance and folklore. I want to fall into this book and live in its all too brief pages. I am excited to read the sequel that is coming out soon because I literally could read so many more books in this series I'm not even kidding.

So this was a better issue than the two before it. I still don't totally love what is happening to the characters but I also see how the plot is leading us to a, hopefully, better place for them. It's just hard when all of them are acting horribly, even if that horrible behavior is for plot reasons.

This was sold to me as a fat super hero story which made me so damn excited. I have craved heroes who looked like me for ages but this is... not what I had hoped for. I really wanted to love this but it takes so long for the story to get off the ground (get it?? because she flies???) and it really turns into "obsessed fan girl with tons of followers on her blog meets star of TV show she's head over heels for and they are somehow instantly friends" very early into the book. Which, ok, fine, but it literally takes up so much of the story and it takes so long for the book to get going and I really thought the characters were just as flatly dimensional as the pages the book is printed on. Super disappointed in this one.

Idk I started off really loving this reboot but the last few issues have been...... rough. I understand WHY the characters are acting the way they are but they are not currently enjoyable to read. Hopefully this improves soon or I might call it quits. As it is, I have mixed feelings about reading anything Whedon-esque even if he didn’t write it himself.
