Listen I'm over here crying over yet another Becky Chambers novel because i am ALWAYS crying over Becky Chambers novel. This who series is so good. Even if you don't think you like SciFi, you should try this series. They are all, without exception. perfect examples of what I love in this genre without any of the bs that I get from parts of the fanbase. Just try them they are so worth it.

This is the start of what I'm sure will be a favorite for me. I like the characters because they are flawed and I like the world that's being built. I am excited to see the plot really get started because it does drag just a tiny bit. Still, really enjoyed it!

This was .... good but not great, that's really all I can think to say on it. I liked the characters alright and I liked the writing style. I thought the world could have had some more solid build and a bit more plot work but I didn't hate it. It was just fine.

I was given this book as an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion. I was really hoping to enjoy this a lot more than I did. Ultimately, the world building and characters were not interesting to me. The writing is beautiful and if the story had been tighter I might have come away enjoying it more. But the truth is that I barely finished this book, even while I found myself liking the way the author put words on the page. It's been compared to a lot of my other favorite speculative witch books but almost all the ones to compares to are adult where as this is almost aggressively YA. Sadly a miss for me.

Not as good as I was hoping. I don't really know exactly what didn't work for me other than just.... all of it.

Darker than the first but still so good. I really liked this backstory, even though I know the outcome. I will for sure read more in this series.

So I wanna start this by saying that I liked Docile when I first read it. I thought (still do think) that it has some issues and can come off as kind of tone deaf at times. This book takes all the issues I had with Docile and somehow makes them worse. I'm sure there are people who love this book and I'm not trying to step on the toes of people who may even find this story cathartic in any way, but yeah it's super not for me. The content warning at the beginning is not nearly enough to cover the extreme nature of the subject matter. Besides just the topics covered, there were too many POVs and too much happening in the story. I didn't like these characters, not at one, and I didn't ultimately feel any connection to them even though I should have because of their trauma. The fact that I left this book feeling empty inside is not a compliment. I'm not sure if this is a sophomore book syndrome of if Szpara is just... not for me after all.

I liked this pretty well but I think there was a lot going on in it, too much probably. A lot of threads that didn't end up getting tied off and a lot of moments that didn't add as much to the story as I would have liked. Overall, despite the pacing issues, it's still a really great book. I'm glad I read it and I'd probably read it again.
