“Sometimes love does not have the most honorable beginnings, and the endings, the endings will break you in half. It’s everything in between we live for.”
This collection of short stories is mainly about Ann’s love of literature and writing and sharing both with the world and as a lover of literature and writing myself, I absolutely loved it. It was warm; that’s the only way I know how to describe it. It was comforting. It was smart and witty and poignant. It was honest in the best way and I really feel like I know Patchett- almost as though she told me these stories over a cup of coffee in my living room. She’s lived such a full life, so different from mine; and yet, her fears are my fears and the things (and people) that bring her joy bring me such, too. The cop propaganda was A Lot and I hated it and if that piece wasn’t in it, let alone one of the longest, this would’ve been a perfect read for me.

“If we merge mercy with might, and might with right, / Then love becomes our legacy, And change, our children’s birthright.”
“Our people, diverse and dutiful. / We’ll emerge, battered but beautiful.”
