I learned so much from Gonzalez in Olga Dies Dreaming. A really beautiful, insightful look at what being Puerto Rico American means. Olga's life is complex and hard and she's just trying to give herself opportunities and protect her loved ones. But when pressure to perform for her mother grows, so does her resentment of her. Simultaneously, Olga's brother, a NYC congressman, is grappling with his sexuality and health. While it took me a bit to get into, Gonzalez's exquisite writing and incredible way of building complex characters and family relationships will capture your heart. She will teach you about the harms of colonization and racism, and the power and beauty of grassroots activism. For anyone who believes in making the world better than we entered, I recommend this to you.
