OOOMPH.

The first half of this? Good. I liked the bones of the plot, I liked the romantic twists and I thought the world building was easy to follow. The dystopian edge with a hint of fantasy was distinct and worked well. It is a standalone and does wrap up main storylines okay enough.

I think this was missing a lot. With love confessions before even the halfway point hit, my interest immediately tanked. The exploration of feelings and chemistry wasn’t all the way there and my investment level waned because I was behind on all the things they were apparently feeling.

Everything plot wise is very easy. I can’t say that one thing wasn’t highly forecasted or was the only option to move the pages forward. Had this been a duology with an expansion of the world and relationship I truly think this could have been grand.

I’d be curious to see what the author writes next though.

NOT QUITE SURE.

This one left me a little befuddled as to how I was going to create a review. I enjoyed the first 50%ish or so. It’s dark, there’s rich kids behaving badly and I was intrigued by the bones of the story. This was my first Julie Soto book too and I thought the writing style had an easy flow as well. The pace was slow at times but picked up as the book went on.

Now, I am just not a seance/Ouija board fan. Especially if that’s not necessarily referenced in the summary and I didn’t know going in. It took me out of the story and my engagement level dropped significantly. I thought it took away from the thriller aspect.

I felt conflicted about many of the plot points and where characters ended up (and that’s fine, I think that’s often the point of thrillers too, even if it’s frustrating).

OH THIS BOOK.

I admit that this took me a little to get into but that ending?? The romance?? Got me in the FEEEELS. Now, it does seem a little insta-ish, but let it grow on you!! Trust the journey y’all.

My historical nerd self went down many a Jack the Ripper research hole after finishing this book. I love historical books that make me want to research. And I love reading historicals that cover different time periods than I generally come across.

And I adored the FMC, Kate. She was strong willed and learning but always seemed to genuinely be trying to take the next right step and I loved her courage. There were many good twists to the plot that ramped up my engagement as the pages moved. I also really adored the romance. It brought the swoon and the passion and the I would do anything to see you happy vibes that I am all over. We love a a man DOWN BAD.

I think this is easily one of my favorites of this whole series now and I have loved seeing the crossing timelines, family trees and all of the touches of faith too. What an incredible book.

THAT’S A NO FOR ME.

I had been warned before listening to this that it might not work for me. I went in level headed and admittedly did like it for the first 50%ish. The bones of the plot were good. The MMC was a rugby player and uber charming. I didn’t mind the FMC, all is hunky-dory.

But after the halfway mark things went downhill. So much so that I’m quite confident this is the only book I will read from this author. I’m good with that. I didn’t like the heaviness of the spice and the third act??? NOPE. One of my most frustrating tropes.

- Romance: 4+ open door; high explicit

WELL I ENJOYED THE HECK OUT OF THIS.

Rather ridiculous to start (and fearing for my star rating) I persevered through the beginning chapters and found a book that had some resemblance to The Simple Wild (not a copycat, promise, just some vibes), and that I was charmed by. The resistance to the romance tropes only brought Margot and Forrest closer together and I am here for it all.

I will say having TWO 20-30 minute chapters that were solely spice was not my favorite (and that wasn’t the only spice here). I could have used less of that but I can’t deny how much of a connection I felt between these two resistant love birds. They were charming, fought hard, and loved harder.

All of that caretaker moments were felt. I loved seeing both Forest and Margot learn to live their OWN lives and still help and care for those most important to them. The side characters truly added to this book and I loved loved loved Margot and her sister’s relationship. There was a lot of goodness woven into this book.

I enjoyed this book so much. I thought it was a good wrap-up to the series (and can still totally be read alone, the epilogue in this one just highlights the previous couples a little).

I loved the magical realism aspect. I thought it was subtle and made the moment just right. All of the times they ended up locked in together caused an incredible amount of chemistry and connection to form. It was swoony and heated and I think Katie Bailey has some of the best kissing scenes around.

The journey was good and I looooved Beckett and his family. A rambunctious bunch who loved so big and I appreciated how they helped Beckett realize he needed to start living his life for him. And I loved Keeley’s arc too. She is spunky and fun and learned to let go of some past hurt to have a fulfilling relationship with Beckett.
